about
“Ugly Town” – the second single from Pascal Babare’s new album Endless Room – unfolds slowly and curiously, from its lulling opening harmonies to its shimmering crescendo, where acoustic and processed textures run together like water through a mill. Though on first listen “Ugly Town” is a folk song, structurally it’s more like a condensed NEU! jam, with its pulsing bass anchoring cycles of guitars and sparkling percussion. If there’s an aural equivalent of the “honeyed morning light” Babare mentions in this song, it’s the analogue-warm production he’s honed on this track. Likewise, the song’s main theme is beautifully captured in the music video. Its grainy 16mm rendition of suburban Melbourne mirrors the fog of conflicted nostalgia through which Babare recalls the towns, rivers and vast oceans of childhood.
