Shitwave was two friends, White Jazz (a high school teacher) and Tony Magic (a gardener), foreigners who'd recently met in the old empire capital, jamming late into the night upstairs at Jazz's house in Chiswick. That winter, circa 2008, the pair would scour the early morning flea markets across London and collect any instrument they could find, and the arsenal gradually expanded to include Casios, a Korg synth, a vocoder, a loop pedal, a suitcase full of percussion, and a broken harmonium. Most weekends the pair would go late into the night conjuring what they dubbed 'The Shitwave': loose, drifting, expansive jams of indeterminate length, moving through stately drones, rhythmic clatter, hypnotic, submerged pop, and — for the bulk of the sessions — A-tonal meanderings that filled up several hard drives. Later, after they both left England, they re-united in a draughty warehouse at roughly the other end of the world and picked up where they left off, now with a piano and some vintage Italian organs to boot. Shitwave is what was culled from dozens of hours of those recordings made between 2008 and 2010 — small pieces, stitched together, representing a joyous and unselfconscious collaboration between two friends.
